Mick Wills is the definitive Djs Dj, forever unearthing lost gems and playing them seamlessly alongside classics and fresh releases (often re-edited by himself) he’s one of the rare breed these days who has managed to build up a regular touring schedule based nearly solely off his djing – most definitely helped by having such a strong trademark sound. With a production output to rival Missy Elliot, these days any new wax that features his name is on the remix or, in this case, the edit front.
I will put my hands up and admit I have no idea who the original artists are on this release on the relatively new French imprint Vielspaß – and google was of no use to me either. The a-side has that grinding druggy feel that permeates much of Will’s remixes and dj sets, brimming with tension giving you just barely the right amount of release. This is a superb track for those djs who like the long blend or it can be just left ooze into your brain slowly but surely.
Wills is never afraid to veer into lighter oddball euro-disco territory either, be it on the near classic Kinky Lovers edit of Grosstadlichter or in his aformentioned dj sets. This is where the b-side edit Fire by The Wall comes into play. 9 minutes may be a stretch in the length but one always gets the feel that Wills’ own dj sets are what these edits are first made for and a Dj can’t really complain about being given lots of mixing time, can they? A suitable trade off for the intensity of the A-side.
