Nightlife is gradually coming back to San Diego. So far from what I have observed the majority of it is not very good. You have boat parties with the same old lineups of just outright garbage. I am hoping as we come back full strength promoters put thought and meticulous detail into their events here in the city. We all are looking for a release from everyday life. Hopefully there are some nights here in which are hot and steamy. We all need it!
One night that resonates with me takes place tomorrow night May 14th at Bang Bang. Paul Johnson makes his highly anticipated return with support from Juliet Mendoza. It is not often you have a night of music presented by a black man and brown woman in San Diego. With that being said I am excited to hear what they both will bring. I am for certain this will be a night of Deep Soulful Black Underground Dance Music. In Bang Bang of all places.
Paul Johnson is a favorite here in San Diego, and for good reason. He is responsible for early house music classics such as, Time Of Love on Peacefrog. Also he still produces modern dance floor bombs such as, his remix of Jerome O entitled I Remember, on Strictly Jaz Unit’s Bandcamp. It is an acid beater just in time for summer and the dancefloor’s return. Most importantly as a DJ Johnson is just outright fun. In his sets you can expect to hear everything from deep soulful goodness, to disco, acid, and of course some Jack. He is a DJ’s DJ, and as we all know those are the best at giving us our groove. I’d suggest dressing to sweat for him, oh and don’t forget the baby powder.
Playing warmup for the evening is Juliet Mendoza from L.A. She is always on the move on the scene here in Southern California. Whether it be as a dancer in which she is accomplished. Also as a DJ we all are watching her come into her own, and it is outright inspiring to observe. Her styles encompass deep to soulful, to techy, and back again. Mendoza’s upcoming release, Soul Rhythm on the Dusk compilation is going work dancefloors into hot and sweaty pandemonium. Arrive early as Juliet Mendoza is set to warm the floor proper.
Paul Johnson and Juliet Mendoza play Bang Bang Friday May 14th. Door opens at 10pm. Early arrival is encouraged as there is limited capacity due to Covid-19 protocols.
