New Music: Being – There

As Tom mentioned in a couple of posts back ISM hit 15 last month. As you do. Fuck knows where the time has gone. Especially this year as I’ve failed to make a single post since 2021. Wouldn’t be the first time I’ve slacked off for long stretches but it’s still important to me that we’re still here. Dance music culture is going through a rather ugly phase at the moment. Covid did nothing to lessen it. Keep on truckin’ sure.

A couple of weeks ago the latest release came out on my label, Apartment. There by Being is an album I’m super proud of getting out there. As with the Broxburn Funk album from 2021 on Firecracker this album is culled from tape recordings made in the early / mid 90s from Edinburgh’s Dave Paton. Unknown to the wider world, I think this is rather special music that fluctuates between ambient, acid and the abstract with tension and funk. It’s raw and rugged and instead of trying to update it to whatever bland standards that have englulfed too much of techno, the hiss, distortion and mixdowns have been left nearly entirely as they were 30 years on.

This is the first tape release for the label. Not sure I ever thought I’d release a tape album. Knowing me I’ve probably not been too up on the the format in the past, but standing still never did anyone ever good. I also think as an album the format suits it perfectly. Vinyl nerds out there don’t despair, the next two label releases are 12″ vinyl. Phew.

Anyways, hopefully some of you out there will enjoy the album as much as I do. There aren’t a huge amount of tapes left so if the physical is your thing, hop on over to Bandcamp. As a sampler here is the incredible 18 minute long Space Between 2. Get on it. For now this music will only be available to purchase on Bandcamp.

Making mixes has not been something I’ve focused on a lot in recent years. I’m going to change this between now and the end of 2022. Have set myself a target to record a mix a month between now and ’23.
First off is one I hadn’t actually planned. I do a couple of shows on Dublin Digital Radio and the show Feathers Glued To Your Face, Bringing Firepower has thrown up my first of these 5 mixes. I usually do the show with my good friend Shane but he was on holidays a couple of weeks ago so here is 2 hours of myself. No planning at all and a bit more languid on the structure than if I’d done prep. It also features a few songs on other mixes I’ve done which usually would be something I’d avoid. As if anyone else gives a shit. T/L and stream below.
