Textura did a really nice interview with Rod Modell from Deepchord and Steve Hitchell aka Soultek. It’s good to see somebody talking to these kinds of faceless producers and getting into their philosophies and techniques, this is really what the internet is good for. You don’t have to worry about selling ad space for this, you do it for the people who are into the music!
They touched on a couple of things in this interview that I find interesting: analogue studio gear (just recently I got my Multivox MX-312 tape echo repaired, and believe me, no digital plug-in can come close to the craziness of that thing!) and its “limitations” and “problems” being the reason for using it, Rod mentions being influenced by early 70’s electronic producers like Tangerine Dream moreso than dub music, they discuss the advantages of very long tracks, and Rod even disses other dub techno acts for going digital/glitched out. One thing I don’t agree with is Rod’s assertion that someone has to be committed to only one style in order to make truly great music. How does this explain Carl Craig, Theo Parrish, or any number of other great electronic musicians? It’s also good to see Rod shouting out Buy Rite out on 7 Mile! All in all, one of the best interviews I’ve seen in a long while…..
