A couple items of note for those who live close by or for those who like to live vicariously…..
We’ve got a new monthly house music night starting up in the 412, a collaborative effort amongst most of the deejays playing the deep shit. The very first one will feature a soundsystem upgrade from the usual, and music played by myself, Yuji San, Eric Justin, and Aaesir St. James. I’m looking forward to this one quite a bit! In the coming months, other ill Steel City deejays like Brother Mike and Jose will also be rotating through the lineup. Additionally, I’ll be playing at a new afterhours here in Pittsburgh on January 31st from 1am-5am at the spot in Larryville called “Your Inner Vagabond”. It’ll be nice to get to play some of those ultra-late-night jams I don’t usually get to trot out. Jwan and I are in discussions for starting up another regular monthly gig or two with some other fresh faced Pittsburghers that I will mention when things are set in stone. ’09 is going to be the year!
My main man DJ Selecta (aka the ill old school hip-hop and party jam deejay and one of the owners of 720 Records where I “work”) started a new blog dedicated to radio show tape rips from his own collection of cassette tapes. The blog is called “Are We On The Air?” and already features some classic underground 412 hip-hop as well as some live cuts from a mid-90’s Stretch and Bobbito show out of NYC. This should be a good one as Jim is completely crazy and has an insane collection of records and tapes.
One of the things I hate about being from Pittsburgh now is the constant “Oh, do you know Girl Talk?” shit I get from cats from out of town. Fuck a Girl Talk. I am actually embarassed to have recently discovered that his previous project The Joysticks played at a crazy party my boys and I threw way back in the summer of ’00. Anyway, my hatred of that joker runs very deep so it made me very happy to see this great blog post in which some doods tear him a new one in just about every facet of his “music” or whatever you call the spectacle that he is all about. It irritates me to no end that he’s out there representing Pittsburgh, but I guess he fits right into that pantheon of garbage 412 acts to hit the mainstream: Anti-Flag, Donnie Iris, Rusted Root, etc. Fuck all of ya’ll. In fact, I think it may be pertinent to point out that all these guys including GT have come from the suburbs. Fuck that shit, too.

well good luck with the gigs, hope it’s a good year for you
Who’s Yuji?
I don’t remember him from my days…
There’s nothing i miss more then when you and J Dub play records. Best 2 you guys!
I know you aren’t content to simply dislike or ignore things not to your taste, tom, but Girl Talk is just too negligible a phenomenon to waste your hatred on. he stumbled onto a way of working that has made him the darling of the 16-21 suburban white kid demo. no one is going to remember him 10 years from now unless he finds a deeper calling in music.
I have seen him play and hung out a bit with him after the show, and he seemed a decent sort. i just don’t care about what he does musically. Plus, I saw Kid606 do similar-sounding hip hop appropriations 10 years ago, and it sounded a lot more interesting musically. and GT frankly has no production skills on top of that –his stuff always sounds grainy and tinny to me.
But hating on him is a waste of time. It isn’t like he’s dropping bombs on women and children.
good luck with this endevour. I have suggested to your co conspirators to perhaps go forward witha full old media blitz in your local free weekly. do it up right! dont do the typical flyer, logirhythmically reduced promoting as time goes on due to discouragement…as many of great nights have ended because of this… remember that really cool “Night Moods” that used to be in the city? also, having a guest DJ from the old days from outta town can’t hurt. 🙂
hope it went well dudes.
did you just dis donnie iris? who’s next, joe grushecky?
i was totally going to mention joe grushecky as well, but i figured no one would have heard of his stupid ass anyway and it wasn’t worth explaining.
