a top 5 is a hard thing, because theyre are certain types of horror genres that I have like a top 10 in. So selecting these are hard. This is the best I can do.
Dawn of the Dead (1978)
A classic I know, but easily one of my all time undead movies. This was Tom Savini’s big breakthrough in prosthetics and unadulterated gore. Need I say anymore than the helicopter, head chopping scene. beast!
Zombie Nosh (aka flesheaters) (1988)
Not to be confused with Zombie Flesheaters. This is an extremely low budget, heavy b-movie zombie film. But one of the best. This has got everything, zombies, naked flesh, terrible prosthetics, amazing one liners and zombie children getting their undead comuppance. This certainly isnt for everyone, but if your a fan of the low budget style horror, its a must see.
Rear Window (1954)
More of a pyschological thriller than a horror, but needs to mentioned. In my opinion one of the most perfect films ever made. Cementing Hitchcock as a master of suspense. This film has me on the edge of my seat everytime!!
ju-on (aka grudge) (2000)
Dont dare talk to me about the american remake. Utter drivel. When I look for a horror film, I look to be scared… I hardly think there are words to describe this films impact on my mental wellbeing, at least for a few days anyway.
[REC] (2007)
As far as new horror films go. This is amazing. The basic premise is a young girl and her cameraman are filming “while your asleep” with a fire crew when they are called out to a routine call about an old woman being stuck in her flat. Then the shit hits the fan. I watched this on my laptop, in the pitch black facing the wall with some good headphones on. The best way to watch it. The ambience music and slight camera warps in this are subtle but sublime. This film is everything the Blair Witch Project shouldve been and a good example of handheld camera work. watch it!
Haze (2005)
A short art house horror by one of the most fucked up japanese directors, shinya tsukamoto. A clostraphobic film about a guy that walks up in a pitch black concrete room, occasionally getting knocked out and waking up in even more fucked up, tortures positions, until he decides he has to escape. A hard film to watch and really fucked up. Buts its only 50 minutes long… go on, make yourself uncomfortable.

don’t have a top 5 but i receently saw a film called “the orphanage”. I pee’d a little.
i can’t get into japanese horror films, man. i’ve tried. i am down with godzilla and Tetsuo amongst other cult-ish Japanese joints, but i cant fuck with their horror. it just doesnt make sense, and that takes any creepiness away for me and turns it into boredom and then sleep. i will have to check out Zombie Nosh, i love low budget films.
what do you have against Blair Witch? i think it had a good concept and great execution.
i will also not repeat any known “classics” since you should all know those anyway, so here are 5 horror films that i love right now for various reasons:
Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer – low budget as hell and pretty fucked up too. bonus for house fans, it was filmed in Chicago in 1985 which looks amazing and gritty.
Pieces – great unintentionally hilarious slasher flick. i saw this in a theatre a couple years back, fucking great experience. i laughed so hard i couldnt breathe for a while.
Sleepaway Camp – another low-budget 80’s camp slasher flick, but with a good twist and lots of good deaths. this one has a really good look to it, along with pretty terrible acting that makes it stand out in my mind.
Martin – i’m a huge fan of Romero’s mid 70’s low budget joints that were filmed in pittsburgh (this, the crazies, and season of the witch) and this is the best one. it’s about a goth dood who may or may not be a real vampire, all while living in Braddock. i fucking love it. the whole movie reminds me of my childhood, its so fucking pittsburgh.
Halloween 3 – this should be a wildly unpopular pick, but i think this is one of the best concepts for a horror movie. had it been anything but “the Halloween movie without Michael Myers in it”, i think people would think its a classic. but since it is saddled with that, people tend to hate. you do get a sweet John Carpenter soundtrack (though he did not direct it) and a bunch of actors you will recognize from The Fog, Assault on Precinct 13, and Escape from New York.
Satan’s Little Helper – this is another one that people seem to hate. i love it. really 80’s style but done in 2004, this has to have the best villain of any recent horror flick. “Satan” is quite hilarious and gruesome at the same time, and the lead actress is hot. you’ll wanna kill the kid, but that’s the point.
oh yeah, you know Tom Savini and George Romero are both from Pittsburgh, right? Savini is often seen around town, Romero moved away recently to Toronto i believe.

The blair witch was o.k. but half way through the film, any normal person wouldve turned off the camera, after this I found it hard to stay immersed with the film.
With [rec] there is constantly a belief in why the guy is still filming, therefore raising the ‘real’ factor if you know what I mean.
yeah man, Ive watched countless docs on romero and the filming of his films. I would be carrying my supersized dawn of the dead movie poster about with me all the time, just incase I spotted him 🙂
Martin and Henry: portrait… are amazing films man. Sleepaway camp ive never seen but Ill have to check out. Im a massive fan of most of the halloween / friday 13th / nightmare on elm street series. Pure slasher horror.
