Here in the UK, stockists of Wax Poetics are fairly scarce, and it’s only recently I’ve managed to pick up a few issues. Beautifully presented and packaged, the writing seems, for the most part, to be full of integrity, passion and enthusiam. I got wind of these anthologies and was lucky enough to receive the first volume for a Christmas present. Bound in a large hardback cover, this is something to treasure – both aesthetically and in terms of the riveting content and minefield of musical history contained within. Read about Idris Muhammad and Bernard ‘Pretty’ Purdie’s claims of who stole ‘that’ drumlick off who, Louie Vega’s 12×12″s that have a special place in his heart, the remix techniques of one Osbourne Ruddock, better known as Dub-pioneer King Tubby, alongside all manner of Hip-Hop interviews, beat-diggers secrets, and the fines imposed on his band by Mr.James Brown. Essential stuff for those who didn’t pick up the early issues. Now I just need Volume.2 !

Some Recent Jazz Records
Yeah I know I promised one post a week this year. It’s been a weird year, but I’m gonna pick the pace back up to one a week or so moving forward. Today I’m gonna write about some of the recent jazz records from the last few years that have been doing it for me….

I picked up Vol 2 late last year at Aquarius Records in SF, just as good as the first.

hmmm, yeah, I’ve never really been one for music mags to be honest, but I think I might pick these up, especially want to read about King Tubby
man, if you don’t read Wax Poetics you’re really missing out. of all the people on ISM, i feel like it is mist directly up your alley. i love it, i get it just about every month. and those early ones that are in these comps have some really great shit in them. Wax Poetics does it right, i only wish they would cover more house and techno things!
yeah, I know, it’s certainly been on my radar, it’s just I’ve never bought music mags of any kind, ever. so these kind of things tend to pass me by.
