A Little Record Store Therapy

Last night, while the family and I were upstairs sleeping, some crackheads burglarized our house. We woke up in the morning to discover they had taken my wife’s work laptop and 2 crates of DVD’s. Thankfully that was all they took, and everyone was alright. So I decided to go hit the record shop for a second, get a little dust on the ol’ fingers to remedy my irritation. Luckily, I found a couple things on my wants list and a couple other unexpected nice things…..

Betty Wright “I Love The Way You Love” Alston Records LP: Really nice early 70’s soul album by Mrs. Wright, who went on to record the dance classic “Tonight’s The Night” (which was also covered on this 12″ by DJ Genesis just a couple years back) for TK Disco later on in the 70’s. This album was produced by Clarence “Blowfly” Reid and features the classic “Clean Up Woman”, as jacked for the hiphop mix of Mary J. Blige’s classic “Real Love” featuring Notorious B.I.G.. I’m also really feeling the B1 cut “I’m Gettin’ Tired Baby” with its really nice string work.

The Whatnauts “Help Is One The Way” Harlem International Records Inc. 12″: This is one that I’ve been looking for a nice original copy of for a while. Outstanding soul disco, as sampled by De La Soul for “Ring Ring Ring” on their LP “De La Soul Is Dead”. This is a great 7:20 extended mix by the man like Tee Scott, one of the funkiest disco remixers of the early 80’s.

Seawind “What Cha Doin’ ” A&M Records 12″: This is some uptemo soulful disco business with a really nice funk bassline. George Duke on the production and the vocals in that early 80’s soul style, this was definitely a nice surprise!

Chocolate Milk “Who’s Getting It Now” RCA Victor 12″: Another disco mix by Tee Scott, this time on a much more electronic 80’s soul tip. Cool effects on the chorus vocals and a spacey electro beat, perfect for those into the boogie sound.

The Limit “Say Yeah” Portrait 12″: Classic 80’s dance jam featuring Gwen Guthrie on guest vocals. I love the almost tropical feel that the electo disco beat has, it gives it that sweet feeling-good atmosphere that the best 80’s jams have. John Luongo on the discomix……

Melody Stewart “Get Down, Get Down” Roy B Records 12″: One of those random disco records with an ill joint on a relatively obscure label. “Get Down, Get Down” has been comped recently by the Idjut Boys, and for good reason: it’s a funky disco jam with just that right amount of dirtiness to it that makes people wanna go bananas. This is actually my second copy of this one, so I can already attest to it’s dancefloor-rocking qualities 😉

Escort “All Through The Night” Escort Records 12″: Escort maintain their “buy on sight” status with another dope release. This one has a little more quirkiness to it than previous efforts, but that’s a good thing! Way too many live bands have trouble doing justice to dance music, they like to demonstrate thier musicianship and the music suffers accordingly. Escort keep it simple, find a nice groove and just ride it out. The Rapture even surprises with a very electronic take on the B-side!
