Post-Spring-Break Update

So yeah, my spring break trip to Chicago may or may not have resembled the above picture, I’ll leave that to you to figure out. On the real though, I had a good time chilling with my boy Noleian Reusse and crew at Transamoeba Studios. I’m gonna do a full post on the trip where I run down the ridiculous amount of records I got, my time hanging out with my boys m50 and Jerome Derradji, the dope club nights I hit with the funny ass late night crew, and all other Chicago antics when I have more time this weekend.

Right now, it’s back to school craziness which will be consuming all my time for this week and probably about the next month or so till I am finally done with it for good. But there’s a couple short little bits I wanted to mention…..

I recently received the two most recent releases on Real Soon, one by Ray Valioso and one by Lerosa. On both of these 12″s, the A1 cut is the one. Mr. Valioso’s “Particles” was supposedly recorded live in Bogota in 1994, but it stands up with today’s abstract house without sounding like anyone else out there. The rest of the EP is more standard deepness in the Track Mode/Moods & Grooves vein. Lerosa’s “Minefield” is now my favorite of his tracks. It’s slowwwww, maybe 105 BPM or so, but it builds and builds in intensity so much that you forget how slow it is. I would play this with Carl Craig’s remix of “Angola” or other similar records, it’s that kind of epic deep track. This 12″ also sees Leo returning to some of his electro roots on “4th Floor”. All in all, two more nice releases to add to the already sweet Real Soon catalog.

My man NCW (whom I have mentioned on here before) has another really nice mix online at the To The Bone website. Right click to download here. I’ve had this one for a couple weeks, it does the job quite nicely!

Oh yeah, one more thing. This is Paxahau’s third year in a row putting on DEMF, a nearly unprecedented run of financial and critical success. However, this has not stopped them from engaging in the time honored tradition of STILL NOT HAVING ANNOUNCED ANY PERFORMERS YET. Jesus, this gets my goat. What are they waiting for? Do they want zero international attendees? To be honest, my hopes for this year being good are fading rapidly. I’m still going to go, of course, but if this shit isn’t markedly better than last year’s overall it may be the last one for me. I can always just drive up to the D for a weekend when something good is going on!

Coming up soon we have a couple guest mixes from Keith Kemp and Jez Proctor, and an interview with Speculator by a new ISM writer who goes by the name of Lina. Yep, you heard that correctly. We’ve “let the bitches in” as she described it 😉 Keep your eyes peeled for more ISM insanity!

Lineup announced. Mutek only beat them by a couple days this year.

my goodness what a load of tripe in that lineup! The Prodigy, Benny Benassi, Carl fucking Cox – what the fucking fuck?!
I assume the ‘real’ parties will be in smaller joints with the more underground cats but fuck me the “main” line-up stinks. Why do Paxahau feel the need to bring in wack european acts when surely there’s enough seriously talented cats from the D that would rip the shit right up?

Surely Carl Cox and the Prodigy will between them cost at least 15 Grand, why do they do this??

Where’s my “I support Carl Craig” badge gone….

your reply shows that you don’t know how bad it was last year. i saw this and i’m actually pretty okay with it, there’s already more artists that i want to see than there were all of last year. carl cox played when carl craig was still booking the fest, prodigy isnt playing the fest itself. benny benassi can eat my cock, but whatever. it could be much much worse.

  6. lerosa says:

cheers for the write-up Pipey, I also thought that Particles track was quite excellent. Oh, and for the record, the electro cut is Minefield, the slow shit, that’s 4th Floor 🙂 Peace, leo.

and only 35$ currently. For the entire weekend. Not as sweet as when it was free. But I’d pay 35 dollars to see ALL these guys for sure.

  9. Dean says:

Yeah of course, there are some seriously dope acts on there too. It just pisses me off that they’re willing to pay so much money to a bunch of mugs. I mean i bet afrika bambaataa or C2 aint gettin half the money them mugs are. you know?

  10. Kenny says:

I saw a bit of Bambatta at BLOC weekend just passed. Take my word for it, you will not want to be in within 5k when he takes to the decks.
