You know, sometimes I think people go out of their way to write things just to irritate the hell out of me. This has to be one of the most asinine things I’ve read in a long time. Obviously, Mr. Rico, the author of the post, is unaware of the original release of “Shades of Jae” whose release he lists as being in 2004 (Edited to add: they have now corrected the release date!). This track has been a huge anthem for house and techno deejays for what has to be close to a decade at this point! The 2004 release date he refers to is from the Peacefrog issue of the song from Moodymann’s album “Black Mahogani”, which is the only way Beatport will get its hands on that mp3 as Kenny has not made the KDJ catalogue available in digital form.
Now we have this “DJ Gossip” blog flogging it because Luciano is currently playing the song. Wow, stop the presses! How amazing is that?!?! Even better is when the author tells us why we should like it: “This is sophisticated, tempting and ultimately sexy.” This would probably make me laugh, if only it didn’t make me want to vomit.
Boy, what would we ever do without Beatport to serve us all the hot new house and techno mp3s and news? I guess we’d be languishing in mediocrity, unable to determine what is sophisticated, tempting, and sexy all by ourselves!
Yet another case of the hype being too little, too late, even in regards to one of the best house music songs ever recorded. If you really wanna know why this record is special, play it. Watch what people do.

Unfortunately I don’t even own a copy of “Shades of Jae.” But I’ve heard it many times on quite a few mixes on the internet.
It’s a funky, dirty groove. A tremendous tune for the dancefloor.
If I had a copy of “shades of Jae” it would’ve been a nice jam to include on a 80’s leftfield dance music mixtape I’ve recorded some 8 or 9 years ago. See playlist below. It would’ve fitted nicely somewhere between the cuts by Flash & The Pan, Giovanotti Meccanici, D.F.X., Nightmoves, and Section 25. Also would have fitted nicely around the last three cuts of side B.
Yeah, I know “Shades of Jae” isn’t an eighties cut but I’m just saying. Plus the below playlist isn’t 100% pure 80’s. Note the cut by Foremost poets, which was released in the 90’s.

Indeed, and don’t get me wrong, it makes me happy when the people that really deserve it get their propers. The problem arises when there are factual inaccuracies, claims of being a “secret weapon” made about a tune that should be a well known anthem to anyone following house or techno, and of course the old “Let’s sell this great tune by putting a white face on it”. Seriously, don’t you think its hilarious to see a post about a Moodymann jam with some corny looking white guy who has nothing at all to do with the song attatched to it? That’s why I put Kenny’s logo at the top of the post, somebody’s gotta keep the record straight.

Actually I’m not deep into the internet like that … Actually not really trying to be(LOL…LOL). This helps me from over indulging in & spending to much time fuc*king w/ the internet. Just simple blogging & EVEN, EVEN foolin around with a myspace page is enough (again LOL).

im torn. i dont know whether to praise you or bitch at you. on the one hand, its great you have a blog with lots of invaluable knowledge and tips into quality dance music. on the other hand, i hate snobby attitudes. you’re a snob for expecting the whole world to know who the fuck moodyman is. thats what djs do, they pull up an old tune that maybe a lot of people have never heard and introduce it to them. im a dj and ive been into house/techno since 1995. should i be ashamed for not ever hearing this tune before luciano played it? hell no. i see nothing wrong with beatportal’s post aside from the wrong release date. all it did was talk about an older tune luciano has been playing lately. so the fuck what. get over yourselves. thats what sucks about dj culture, bunch of prissy fags that take themselves and the history of this music way too seriously. people need to take off their judgement hats and put on their party hats.

how exactly can we have a snobbish attitude when the whole idea of the site is to expose people to the music, deejays, and ideas that are not currently being explored? but thats hardly the point.
my qualms (in a more concise list format) with the post are:
1. wrong information
2. disingenuous marketing by using something other than the quality of the record (mainly the white mnml face) to sell it
3. general cluelessness to the genre
#3 is apparently your problem as well if you have been into house music since 1995 and not heard that tune. seriously, that tune has been huge for so many deejays across the techno and house spectrum that its ridiculous. what kind of house and techno have you been listening to?
it’s also sad that the “serious vs. party” line has to be brought up yet again. i don’t know about you, but my whole life is not a party. in fact, there would be nothing to party about if life was all about not giving a shit about anything. studying the history and ideas about partying has been a constant since the beginning of house music. in 1984 people were playing 10+ years of music in their sets, that didnt happen by not taking the music seriously!

thanks for telling me my “problem”. this just in: my friend dj monk who lives down the street from me also has never heard the tune. im willing to bet many other well respected djs also have not heard it. i bet the martinez brothers at the young ages of I think like 16/17 years old haven’t heard it, they would’ve been like 5 years old when it came out. they dont deserve to have jaded old farts chin stroking their sets, they dont deserve to have comments like “young punk kids these days dont know shit”. give me a fukn break. dont be jealous you’re a balding dj doing free gigs at the local pub clearing dancefloors while they’re actually rocking it. that’s ok though, because at least you can contribute greatly not on the floor but on the internet.

If you’re going to write about something, anything, do a little research, make sure you know your facts, it’s really not that difficult!
