Friday Goodies

Lots of nice stuff for everybody this Friday: some words on Chymera’s upcoming releases, info about Convextion appearing on the radio this evening, and a nice disco/house/electro/techno mix by gmos….

Chymera

First off, I recently received some tunes from another Irish producer who is just banging things out right now: Chymera. I remember virtually running into Brendan for the first time around 2003 or so, when he was on a 313 related email list. Now, he’s dropping ridiculous melodic techno jams on labels like NRK which put out his most recent 12″ “Wish”, which sounds like a housier version of the clean uplifting techno that Underground Resistance is known for. Perhaps even better than that release though is the jam “Shadowdancer” which will be dropping on vinyl in a couple weeks on the Ork label out of Ireland. This tune reminds me of Omar-S’ “Just Ask The Lonely” but with a more overt melody, it just rolls along building bit by bit to a rather extatic conclusion. I recommend you check it out on his myspace page, I’m going to be hammering this one for a long minute! On the flipside, “Planetarium” has a feeling not unlike the early Mathew Jonson records on IIWII, nice reverbed synths, really nice fall afternoon music. Also coming up is Chymera’s debut 12″ on Delsin, a long-time favorite label of many of the ISM techno-nerds. “Hundulu” is the track, and while Soul Designer (aka Fabrice Lig) drops a nice remix on the b-side, it’s all about the original for me. It’s a tougher tune than his other recent jams, with some pounding drums and massive strings, it builds and releases, builds and releases. I am definitely looking forward to hearing this one dropped at DEMF ’08, it’s the kind of jam that Derrick May or Kenny Larkin will slay people with. Check out sound samples of it on the Delsin site. And best of all for deejays like me who play slow, he keeps the tempo slow enough to mix with other music outside of just techno, unlike many other melodic techno producers.

Secondly, a friend of mine in Chicago is having Convextion on his radio show tonight. Here is the info for those in Chicago and those who would like to stream the show over the web:

Their radio show has had guests such as Taho (France – Delsin), Kage (Detroit), Velocette (NYC), Todd Sines (NYC – Planet E), Archetype (NYC), AUX-88 (Detroit), John Arnold (Detroit –
Fragile), Steve Tang (Chicago – Emphasis), T-1000 (Detroit / Chicago – Generator), Common Factor (Chicago – Planet E), Zachary Lubin (Chicago – 6277), Soultek (Chicago – Echospace), Hieroglyphic Being (Chicago – Mathematics), Nolian Reusse (Chicago – Mathematics), Mike Wade (Chicago – Tresor), Quantazelle (Chicago – Dust Science) and Jacen Solo (UK – Ai) in the past, so checking it out on a regular basis might also be a good idea! Rumor is that Convextion will be rolling straight from the airport to the radio show, so expect him closer to the end of the show than the beginning. But tune in for the whole thing, lots of good music should be played!

Finally, if you need a music fix right now, my man gmos (from Ireland as well, also an ISM reader and commenter) has a mix up here entitled “Let Me Be What I Wanna Be” that features many of my all time favorite jams:

1 Gene Harris – Prelude
2 The Russell Brothers – The Party Scene (SV)
3 The Jones Girls – You Gonna Make Me Love Somebody Else
4 Family Tree – Family Tree
5 Theo Parrish – Rain For Jimmy
6 Rolling Stones – Miss You
7 Lenny Williams – Midnight Girl
8 M. Pittman – There’s Somebody Out There
9 No Way Back (Ron Hardy)
10 Class Action – Weekend
11 Loosefingers – Lamentation
12 Patrice Scott – Atmospheric Emotions
13 LHAS Inc – Captured
14 Smith N Hack – Space Warrior
15 The Other People Place – Let Me Be
16 Recloose – Kapiti Dream
17 Wardell Piper – Super Sweet
18 Oto Gelb – He Dances All Night
19 Loleatta Holloway – Catch Me On The Rebound

so check that out!

Also, I’d like to mention that Wojtek (aka Detroitio here on ISM) will likely be heading back to Poland to be with his ailing grandmother for a week or so. Let’s keep him, his grandmother, and his entire family in our thoughts. As important as music is, nothing is more important than family. Music is wonderful because it helps us connect with each other, and no connection is stronger than that familial bond. It’s easy to forget about that in this hyper-accelerated society with so much pressure to do other things, but it’s importance is perhaps even greater now because of this pressure.

For me Chymera’s best release is his Icicle/XE 12″ from ’04. Not lived up to the promise of that since. A real shitty master on it, but its just a HUGE record. Never leaves the bag.

  2. gmos says:

thanks for linking to my mix Tom, much appreciated

  3. Really enjoyed this mix. Pacing & the variety in selections – Very nice. BTW gmos selections on the techy side are of the variety I would spin. Hearing “Lamentations” took me back to hearing Larry Heard’s “Amnesia” for the very 1st time, and this is one of my favorite tracks by him. Patrice Scott’s and The Other People Place’s tracks had me open as well. Most tracks (guess that’s why these are called ‘tracks’ as opposed to ‘songs’ or ‘compositions’) are linear, but for some reason this element was really noticed as I listened to the Other People’s track. Guess I was expecting shifts in structure because, IMO, this could have been one of those ‘epic’ type tracks that take dancers on a journey. (I think E2E4 is the only linear track that does this for me.) But this track is perfect as the foundation track for medley mixing during peak hours … and no I’m not saying it doesn’t work on its own because it does. Also wanna say Family Tree, and especially Lenny Williams’ “Midnight Girl” are forever faves. Everything was good listening to this set, unfortunately, on my end, it kept stopping at The Other People Place’s track. I wanted to hear, too, how gmos closed this set.

  4. BTW I’m already hip: Loosefinger = Larry Heard.

  5. Msr. Twon' says:

kapiti dream is such a great song. One of recloose’s all-time best. mos definitly not a track…a song as deep as it gets!

  6. Msr. Twon' says:

ive never met anyone else who’s played that wardel piper cut. I thought i was the only one who knew about that.Ha

  7. [mark] says:

that “hundulu” track…man, that’s some serious shit. it sounded huge on my rinky-dink laptop speakers. must. find.

  8. Ilya says:

Chymera’s been keeping busy. 7 releases already this year and more on the way. I picked up his Silent Running EP earlier this year and enjoyed that. Glad to see that he has more stuff.

  9. kuri says:

Second Tom’s comments on “Hundulu.” Massive track from a massive artist and great guy too.

  10. asciinoid says:

‘Gorky Park’ is still my favourite track of Bren’s under his i.am.an.exit moniker, was originally available on Polar as a free release, since licenced to Orlando Voorn’s Triangle Records, subtle downbeat bouncy Virus synth action, excellent track

  11. vinyluser says:

the Kapiti Dream original is also amazing by George Duke!

    @SoulFunkLifestyles
I love that Other People Place album, it really stands out in the Drexciya catalogue, pretty different from everything else they did.
And E2-E4 is definitely one of my favourite pieces of electronic music ever, just beautiful.

Don’t know why it was cutting out on you, hope you managed to sort that out.

and, yeah, agree with everyone on Kapiti Dream, such a sweet track, but I never heard the George Duke track, must check it out, thanks!

props to Chymera, really feeling that Hundulu track, sounds great, also noticed on the Delsin site that there’s a Newworldaquarium album out soon too, it really is overload, great! 🙂

  13. Broken Audio Movement / TR One says:

once again a lesson in expression from the old gmos, good stuff mate. feelin as always, how did yourgig go last night? had a pretty nice set in the globe ourselves, rocked some marvin gaye!

Kenny i agree completely with you, icicle/Xe is most definately his best release imo and i dont think he has made anything thats lived up to that since, such an amazing record, up there with my favourite irish cuts of all time…and thats a complement
