Daddy’s Sacrifice – Mix

A few weeks ago a friend of mine got in contact with me to see if I wanted to help relieve him of his record collection, which he was getting rid of due to the arrival of his first born later in the year. Records do tend to take up a bit of space after all. I came away with a large amount of vinyl and I said the least I could do was to make a mix for him. You can figure out from the track list that a lot of the music was originally purchased in the earlier part of the last decade/end of the 90s and Stu also played a lot of electro, so it’s fairly prominent. There are a few obvious big tracks on here which I’d actually probably never have owned if not been handed to me, French Kiss being one. Of course then I actually go and put it on the mix ! So this maybe ain’t one for the underground nerds out there, but it was fun to make as I restricted myself specifically to what he gave me and I wanted to try and squeeze in the different type of stuff I got so it fluctuates from house to electro to techno to disco and back around again. Apologies for some of the poor sound quality (it’s quite manky around the Decal/Radioactive Man cuts) and I’ve since rejigged my set up but I was happy enough with it that I didn’t wanna re-record it.

  1. Nice picture 😉

The record is almost bigger than the baby !

Will check this nice selection too.

    Ha!

Your friends predicament has been on my mind of late having just welcomed our own first born into our cramped home! Had a good rummage through and managed to shed about 500 records- gave pretty much all of them away to friends and charity shops.

The arrival of a newborn can change things in really unexpected ways, i’m out a lot less so have actually a bit more disposable income to spend on records! It’s also pretty hilarious to watch the little spud trying to get his head round the nuttier end of PaPa’s record collection!

He’s got a wall of vinyl in the little nursery room, it should be ok until he’s mobile, then an alternative storage solution will have to be arranged to avoid drooling/pulling/sratching/toppling/baby-cide situations.

A week after he was born I brought the reissue of “Slam Dance” home, slapped on “Stars” and had a wee boogie around the living room with him in my arms. It was pretty much the happiest moment I’ve ever had.

In fact sticking on a record and having a little spin around the room seems to be a pretty good settling technique, although unlike the baby in the picture above, Novel Sound isn’t really the best for sleepy-bye-byes!

I went through the same thing when my little one arrived 2 1/2 years ago. Luckily, I had a friend who was willing to buy my records…which gave me enough for some smallish, desk top gear. echospace/deepspace material is best for putting babies to sleep.

Stars is such an amazing song. That sounds like a pretty great moment.

I had a day looking after my first born when she was still very young (1 or 2), when I just played Theo tunes all day… this was the earlier, mellower Theo bits – Jill Scott, Dan Ryan, Summertime… I think maybe the Rotating Assembly stuff too.
We had such a nice, calm, placid type day. It all felt very cocooned and lovely…
Dunno how much of this was down to Theo, and how much to Maisie having a good day… but twas nice.

Get your kids playing vinyl as soon as… it lovely seeing children able and comfortable to deal with records. Especially when you come across kids who have no idea what these big black circles are.

my wee one seems to prefer synthy stuff. he was bought “soothing sounds for babies” by raymond scott when he was born which is good fun and seems to quite like my Kraftwerk records too!

he most emphatically does NOT like Albert Ayler!

  7. pipecock says:

my son started liking Kraftwerk when he was 2. he is a HUGE fan now that he is 8. he used to fall asleep for his daily nap listening to the 9 minute mix of Carl Craig’s “A Wonderful Live”, i reccomend trying that one out as well.

  8. pipecock says:

i’ve gotta say, one great thing about the US is the abundance of space that results in many big houses that aren’t expensive. my records have their own room, so does my son. and we still have some to spare!

  9. bernardo says:

Not in NYC unfortunately…they’re invading everything…records spilling into my kitchen at this point!
I thought that baby was holding a Levon Vincent… that’s quite funny! Nice mix / pic / tribute.

my nephews like dabrye and J Dilla and everything similar. No techno ever for them though, I tried and gave up.

  11. nice mix Kenny… got some nice stuff

My record collection has been growing since the birth of my baby boy.

by the way, cute kid! he must have a nice looking father 😉

I think sharing your passion for music with your son or daughter must be one of the most bonding, beautiful things you could do as a parent.
It’s enough to make me jealous,
due to the lack of passion my family had for music. *sniff sniff*

  13. struggle says:

i made the mistake of selling my collection after my daughter was born almost 12 years ago. i’ve managed to get a lot of the stuff i was missing back. it’s good to give some things up, but not music..i learned the hard way.

  14. Adrian Smith says:

I’ve been listening to mix over and over, the past few weeks, and i think its one of your best ones yet.
Loving the variety of styles in this one, it takes you on a musical trip, especially when you restricted your selection.

  15. kenny says:

Nice one. glad you dug it.
