Gigs, Mixes

Some Gigs and A New Mix By Me

I’ve got a bunch gigs coming up in the next few weeks for those of you in and around the Pittsburgh area. First off, tonight I continue my little March Madness at a new night called Sweat at Club P on Polish Hill. Last time was really fun, and the spot is nice and cozy and underground. I rock it tonight and again on the 31st.

Also, I am doing another monthly party at New Amsterdam in Lawrenceville along with the Spoilers gang called Love Is Wet. I was a regular guest there when it was a bi-weekly Thursday night, now it is a monthly Saturday night, and we bring in the big guns from Impact Audio Sound to keep the bass low and heavy. On April 3rd we have local hero Ed Um in the house to bang out all sorts of disco, house, afro, latin, dub, and whatever other kinds of craziness he has in his bag these days. Myself, Nikkels, and Lauren G will be opening up and creating atmosphere. There’s also a video artist every month bringing in lots of crazy visuals, in April it will be done by Optofonica. For the May 1 edition of Love Is Wet, our special guest will be the one and only Detroit deep house soldier Rick Wade! Everyone on here should know the score with Rick’s productions and his label Harmonie Park, it will be worth it to come out to see one of his very few US deejay sets if you are anywhere near by. Keep your eyes on this space for more info shortly….

Here’s a pic of me playing records last time with the visuals done by Tom McConnell:

One more gig to mention: on Friday March 26, my man Jwan Allen and I will be dropping the ill house, disco, techno, and electro along with dope hip-hop/soul deejays Vex and Sean MC at Belvedere’s in Lawrenceville. In particular, Vex is one of my favorite deejays in the city, and his production is no joke either (as you may find out one day if I ever get a job!).

Okay, one last tiny bit of blatant self-promotion! My man Selecta asked me to do a mix for his new radio show Grand Groove that happens late every Sunday night/Monday morning from 12am-4am on 91.3 FM WYEP. Selecta plays all kinds of music that is relevent to the interests of ISM readers: soulful hip-hop, neo-soul, house, funk, etc. My mix played on this past Sunday’s show. You can grab the whole show in 3 parts here: 1 2 3 or grab just my part here.

Tracklist for my part:

Rahsaan Patterson “It Ain’t Love” MCA LP
Ibex “360” Rush Hour 12″
James Duncan “Friday Night Sessions” Le Systeme 12″
Adventures in Barcelona “No Doubt” Balance Alliance 12″

Jill Scott “He Loves Me (Illegal Remix)” Hidden Beach 12″

I know I said that I was done doing mostly deep house mixes, but this one was by special request so there you have it.

nice mix Tom. loving that Delano Smith “Nebula” track.

  2. pipecock says:

it’s funny, i had only been rocking “this heart” from that EP until the day i did this mix. i needed to check my recording levels, so i grabbed the first record i laid my hands on and threw it on. it was this, and i was like “damn, why have i been sleeping on this cut?!?!?!”. dope EP by delano!

  3. ytz says:

    big up yourself tom –

great-looking tracklist, on the DL now

  4. Tom says:

Everything Delano Smith puts out has at least two amazing tracks. Guy is out on his own. “This heart” is beautiful.

Off topic, but thought people here might be interested in this documentary on detroit music on bbc. Originally went out in 2008, but was repeated last week. Prob not available in US, but the computer literate amongst you might know how to get around it with proxies or whatever it is you do. http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b009372j/Motor_Citys_Burning_Detroit_from_Motown_to_the_Stooges/

They showed this too, which is more about the auto industry, social history etc., but also enjoyable (and soundtracked with Detroit music) http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b00rkm3y/Requiem_for_Detroit/

Only available on the iPlayer until this Saturday.

  5. kuri says:

“Nebula” was the reason I bought that EP. but i soon found out the rest of it is sweetness as well. I liked it much better than that recent Third Ear release.

  6. pipecock says:

yeah that Third Ear one was not what’s up. i wonder whose choice those tracks were for that release?

  7. pipecock says:

thanks for the heads up on these BBC joints!

i do have to say that there have been some Delano Smith stinkers: the recent Third Ear EP kuri and i are discussing upthread (and really, the other one on Third Ear wasn’t too good either, i passed on that as well) and the Message to the DJ record. outside of those slipups, i generally tend to love his records. all the Mixmodes are dope.

  8. kenny says:

I think the Sunrise ep by Smith on third ear is pretty good. “Something for myself” off it is awesome.
The mention of those detroit docs just gave me a flashback to bloc. I remember one of them being on the tv at one stage and we were thinking “cool, they’ve put some detroit stuff on the in house channel” (there is a “bloc tv”). We then clicked it was just bbc haha. speaking of bloc i think my brain has sorted itself out enough to do some sort of right up on last weekend – though its pretty hard to put into words a lot of what goes on at bloc 😉

my brain has sorted itself out enough to do some sort of “right” up

I’d give it another week 😉

  10. Msr. Twon' says:

Great mix Tom. See you in two months!

  11. kenny says:

I saw that the minute i posted it and i thought, will i correct myself and i thought…nah, whats the point, that mistake speaks volumes 😉

  12. ciaran says:

i second that recommendation of julien temple’s film ‘requiem for detroit’ (http://www.filmsofrecord.com/content.php?id=138) – it contains some fascinating footage of the city.

  13. meschi says:

Bit late on this. Beastin mix man. really enjoyed it this morning.

  14. pipecock says:

thanks so much, man. i didn’t think this would be up your alley, but i’m glad it is! this comment made me dig this out to play in the car, it is pretty nice 😉
