Guest Mix: Scott Ferguson ISM Mix Vol 12 + New Ferrispark Releases

Our man Scotty F has probably dropped more mixes for us than any of the people who actually write for ISM at this point. That doesn’t stop each one from being a special moment though, he is just that kind of deejay. Now that his web radio show Below the Green is in retirement, you won’t be able to get as much of a regular taste of his deejaying so enjoy this one!

Mix 12 is all about hiphop, and to me that is interesting because the most recent two Ferrispark records are very much done with a hiphop aesthetic. Sounding very much like a jam with some records and a sampler, these are raw ass house cuts released with minimal artwork!

First up is the mysterious JBSF record. I’m not going to be the guy to blow the cover of the producer here, but let’s just say that if you’re a regular ISM reader you should be able to decipher that moniker pretty easily (I know I did 😉 )! My pick of these is the B1, submerging the soulful chords to create a serious late nite banger. The plaintive vocals add a bit of a Burial-esque touch, but not sounding derivative in any way. Nasty stuff.

The Black Boxx EP comes with similar amounts of info on the label. This one feels similar with its use of samples, but with slightly higher energy levels. The general vibe is that of a long lost Moodymann B side from an obscure early release, with simple arrangements that are a true strength when the time is appropriate to drop these kinds of tunes. The B2 is my cut on here, with aquatic melodies and deep sub-bass that will sound perfect at a late night pool party this summer.

These are definitely two gems in the already sweet Ferrispark catalog, and some of my favorite tunes so far this year!

As for the mix, you can check the tracklist here. It features some of my all-time favorites like “It Ain’t Hard to Tell”, as well as a tiny snippet of vox from one of the most distinctive and slept on rhymers ever, Nine.

Loving both releases. I really hope that Jambon Bonbon & Salami Floss get together in the studio again. That’s a match made in charcuterie/confectionery heaven.
