Pharaohs – Rinse Dream

What with it being a pretty summery day here in Dublin today I’m going back again to an earlier release from the year with the last 12″ from the US group Pharaohs. Trading on the less is more approach over the last few years, their sporadic releases have all been pretty much essential, especially the stunning coated-in-balearic grooves of Ahumbo off this 2013 release on ESP Institute. They always complement these stylings with some slightly tougher edged tracks that touch on acid, cosmic, techno and electro, delivering an eclectic blend that will always keep you guessing.

On the title track on Rinse Dream – from Vinyls on Wax Records Ltd –  they slow things right down, allowing themselves nearly ten minutes to open up the languid grooves and bass before some saxophone closes off the track beautifully, another fine example of their mix of electronics and traditional instrumentation. They roughen things up on the driving Mr Fontel before bringing it back to the more balearic side of things on the closing El Datil, leaving us with another essential release and again leaving us wanting more…
