Mix: Dimensions / w Lerosa & Kenny

I’m pretty sure this is the longest I’ve gone without posting on ISM since I joined over 10 years ago. So it goes. I’m still buying music and Djing – and slowly but surely, releasing records through my label Apartment – along with working on the Open Ear Festival; so while I’m not focusing my energies on writing, I’m probably more involved in this world than ever before. I sometimes feel bad, as dance music has become such a – albeit at times mostly hilarious – shit show of over-hyped empty vessels, MOR techno and commercial kowtowing  masquerading as “underground”, whatever the fuck that means now anyways. It honestly feels like the actual music is the least important part of the culture. You’ll get more coverage saying all the right things about all the right topics instead of talking about great music. That should make me more determined to just highlight some great new music but, yeah, after a decade at it, I can’t simply force myself to do it. People are still throwing great parties, lots of great music is being released, it’s just feels sometimes like those doing it for the right reasons are those being ignored the most. Actually, now that I think of it, when has it ever been different. There’s just a stupid amount of €€€ floating around now, bringing with it an unhealthy and unsustainable approach to commercialising dancing.

That’s enough cynical hand-wringing! I’ve also been lazy on the mix making front too. But a few weeks back myself and Lerosa recorded a new mix in his sitting room. No over-arching narrative, no exorcising of demons, it’s just a dance music mix. One that we are both really happy with, with all its platter wobbles and spin-back saves. Thanks to Oscar from Mexico for asking us back as part of his Dimensions series, after our first contribution in 2016. We enjoy playing music together; hey maybe you should book us to play your party. I know, in 2018 it’s rather embarrassing, but we don’t have agents, managers or a PR company, but don’t let that put you off.

  1. Just yesterday I checked a blog that has recently passed the two year anniversary since the founder posted on it (and three months since there were any posts at all). I still check regularly, though, because I still think this format is the best to discover things I had no idea even existed without dealing with Facebook or Twitter’s fucking algorithm bubbles.
