Bye bye CBS

cbs

Just a quicky for anyone not already aware, but the mighty Cybernetic Broadcasting System closed shop today. I-f’s announcement can be read here. It seems it just wasn’t viable for them to keep the station going, which is a sad example of how we can take sites like this for granted. But they don’t run themselves and the time and effort it took just wasn’t being replicated in listenership. It looked like it was going under last year but donations kept it a float, this time it seems definite. Billy Holiday – Gloomy Sunday was the last track played a few hours ago. While I hadn’t listened to it much over the last year, it kept me company on many late nights when I was studying in college, as there was always a chance of something weird or wonderful being on. It was the only station I ever listened to on a regular basis and for any out there who never tuned in, you really missed out. Lets hope that sometime in the future I-f and the gang get up to something new and equally original, but until then we’ll just have to live with the memories…

man, it is heartbreaking to hear this. i can remember how crazily happy i was the first time RobotDJX played one of my mixes on CBS, i still have the screencaps! in fact, i think i have screencaps of the playlist from all the times i know of that they played me on there. it will be cool to show the grandkids one day when CBS is nothing but a legend. i am looking forward to whatever else he has in the pipeline, hopefully another radio type site but with a better business model…..

    CBS RIP

  2. What a drag. Thank god for PBR and cheap prostitutes. Thank you CBS, you were a good friend.

Whenever I listened to it I ended up on discogs tracking down some gem they just played…shame to see them go.

the greatest part about the cbs for me is that it was open to anyone to contribute tracks and mixes and really feel part of the whole project. as pipecock says, when they first played a mix of mine i could hardly contain myself. i can’t think of anywhere else where i discovered so much music. plus it was a great community, i met so many likeminded people through it and i had some amazing times in the netherlands at the microparties. also playing live on the cbs from Ferenc’s house was quite a moment! i’ll always miss it.

at the end of the day though it took all of his time up to run the radio and if he thought it wasn’t developing as he wanted i can see why he would want to move on to new projects. i personally hope there’ll be some new music coming out. i had heard that they were building a new parellax corporation studio.

not everything is lost: the community is already gathering on a new spaceship quickly launched before the mothership crash: http://www.robotsforrobots.net

my four years of C-B-S was like university, discovered so much great music that really developed/changed my musical tastes, it’ll never be forgotten

Respect to Ferenc and all contributing robots

I discovered (and bought!) so much music based on things I heard there. I expect some phoenix to rise from the flames eventually, so hope springs eternal. There’s a lot of net radio out there, but few are as well curated as C-B-S. Peace

RIP CBS – you will be missed.

Also have to chime in with everyone, CBS made me discover a lot of new music. And don’t forget the forums, nice place with plenty of good free mixes. Sigh.

don’t forget all the mixes are still out there on http://www.robotdj.net 🙂

dry your eyes, I’m sure it will be back – this is not the first time it’s “ended”

  12. pipecock says:

i think the past year or so really was just a reprieve from the inevitable. i certainly wouldn’t assume such a sunny outlook on the whole thing if an influx of donations and whatnot was not enough to save it.

I’ve never seen/heard anything else like CBS and chances are I never will again.

Saturday in Chicago: The Soirée

This Saturday nite February 4th 2023 in Chicago is a very special event. Noleian Reusse and I have been friends for about 14 years now, and in that time we have DJed together and made music together on a number of occasions. Now we are throwing our first party together. I hollered at the homeboy…
