Guest Mix: Scott Ferguson #3

The Eye

It really is getting harder and harder to talk about these mixes of Scott’s. I am a huge fan of mixing things up by feeling, and he manages to do a very good job across many genres every single time. This one is a heavily atmospheric mix, beginning with swirling ambience and scratchy textures before sliding into more structured but still emotive Britpop and shoegaze. He then transitions into some forlorn acoustic shit, including an album cut from one of my all time favorite autumn records, REM’s “Automatic for the People”. I have been sitting on this one a bit, waiting for the cold weather to hit in Pittsburgh a bit more as this captures the essence of this time of year perfectly. I continue to be amazed at how seamlessly Scott can trace lines between 80’s and 90’s rock and deejay music’s formats. Whenever I ask someone to do a guest mix for ISM, I let them know that we are down with going wayyyyyyyyyyyy out of the norm. Scott keeps on doing it and doing it and doing it…..

Looking large as usual – will check when I get back from work. Never thought that I’d see Kings Of Convenience on an ISM mix but I’m glad to be proved wrong! Lovely LP, that.

we haven’t had any kings of convenience, but i did use the Erlend Oye track that Morgan Geist produced on one of my mixes. i havent listened to the KoC stuff really, but the track on this is nice! i like lazy atmospheric shit, even the really white kind 😉

Me too. One of my all-time favorites. Great album.

I’m also a huge ‘Kings of Convenience’ fan. A few years back I was able to see them in a little bar in Detroit with about 60-75 fans. Amazing. Their two albums are some of my favorite music ever to drop.

Am I the only one having trouble getting the link to work? Looks like a really good mix, KOC are great, think I may have first heard them early in the morning on the Blue Room – good 5am vibes, all the mix needs is some late 70s early 80s era Scott Walker (Fat Mama’s Kick!) and it would be perfect!

Nevermind, comp playing up, on the dl now…

I’m really enjoying this one… love the KoC edit.

Speaking of “lazy atmospherics” in this vein, for those that enjoyed this mix, the overall vibe (sans vocals) reminds me a little of the “Mysterious Skin” soundtrack – definitely worth a listen as well:

tom, i hope the britpop reference is not in relation to radiohead

that would be as offensive to me as someone referring to theo parrish as American R&B would be to you 🙂

  10. -great mix! top shelf. this is an excellent Fall soundtrack. I haven’t heard that Jane’s Addiction track in ages. This mix is gonna be on the iPod for some time. Thanks tom and scott!

Loverly mix, enjoying it right now. Somehow it’s just right for the hazy changing fall Chicago weather.
