Bone havin’ a groan

Bone

Dj Bone ain’t a happy bunny…

It was brought to my attention today by one of my good people abroad that the label “Be Chosen” had released a vinyl EP with three songs containing my entire Music Speech from SUBX01! I license to people, labels and projects where I see fit but to use my shit (not even sampling it but the whole thing just over their track) without even asking me was & is jacked-up (way wrong).

This is just to let everyone know that I NEVER gave them permission to use my vocals, have never even heard of the label and was never approached by anyone from Be Chosen.

Needless to say I am not very happy about this and action is being taken. Any help you can give me by spreading the word about this label and what they did would be very helpful! They don’t know me or how I conduct business….

KeepDeep,
Bone

Hmmmm, bit of interesting one this. On one side I can understand Bone’s irritance at not being credited or being acknowledged on this new track, on the other, its a sample of Bone talking, on a 7 inch that was given away for free with a mix CD . I feel like it is somewhat of an over reaction. They haven’t jacked a piece of Bone’s music and taken credit for it. I haven’t heard the original spoken word that he is talking about, but using this sort of thing has been going on for donkeys. The obvious one that comes to mind is Can You Feel It, while another more recent 12″ I enjoyed that sampled a huge chunk of a speech was this Oracy 12″ on Mojuba. As you can see on the discogs entry there is no mention of a credit to the speech maker – and there isn’t one on the vinyl either. Similarly on Bone’s Body Bags 12″ there is no mention of the voice sample of that on discogs. He seems to feel that because they took it wholesale that there is maybe a difference. Would he hunt me down if I sampled one of his rants from the beginning of his Attack series? I can hear the counter argument already; Richie Hawtin sampling the Transition vocal, The difference for me is that it was on a mix CD, of what was going to be a major commercial release. Be Chosen is a small – unheard of by many, no doubt – label, who  may just have simply been naive about the whole thing.

Calm down Eric, no one is stealing your music and selling it as them. It’s just you talking. It could simply be a case of them empathising with what you’re saying and thus, as I said above, naively taking it to add to a track of their own. Maybe they came across it on the internet, without a clue it was you? It isn’t a bootleg of your music and they haven’t pressed a record of music under the guise of being you. Finishing with this

They don’t know me or how I conduct business….

leads me to believe the heavies are about to be sent around. Don’t blow your top just yet. And in the future don’t press up an acapella if you are worried about this happening.

  1. they actually did something similar with loops from a good friend of min (Hector Pizarro) on this release http://www.discogs.com/release/1357570

they actually said they would go ahead nad give credits for it but never did, even though there was a contract from the original label who released the loops.

it might be ok to do something like this once but if you keep doing it someone will take notice like Bone did. They could have at least put it on the credits saying they used vocals from his record imo.

man, this shit pisses me off so bad. this is fucking DANCE MUSIC. people have been jacking shit since the very beginning. not only is it not wrong, i think it is ESSENTIAL for dance music to recycle itself like that.

i have no problem with mashups (though i wouldnt play most of them myself), jacking acapellas, jacking loops, re-edits, etc. if someone puts out a whole track that is still available from its original artist or if someone puts out another artist’s whole original under their own name, then i can see a beef. other than that, come on. grow a fucking pair. making a statement about the quality of their music is fair game, but complaining that they used your shit? in a dance track? come on. fucking ridiculous.

Given that Bone had already released this spoken work on a record I can understand his frustration.

Do you know who was the speech maker on the Oracy track – “Another family day” ? I’ve always been curious as its a great record and that speech is really impressive.

Just to let the infinitestatemachine folks know, your RSS feed hasn’t been working in a couple weeks (at least Bloglines can’t seem to get anything from it). I’ve missed several nice posts it looks like. Time to catch up.

  6. kenny says:

No idea! It is really effective on that track though..

  7. pipecock says:

i monitor our RSS through google reader and everything has been just fine for me. does anyone else seem to be having a problem with the RSS stuff?

  8. Jacob says:

I’ve been having problems reading it through Bloglines as well. They have this message: “The feed URL returns a page that does not look like an RSS feed. This can be caused by the feed URL being incorrect, or it can be caused by a configuration issue with the server hosting the feed.” You might want to shoot them an email through their contact form.

  9. matt says:

The last six posts just came through on Bloglines. Thanks for fixing!

i think old boney boy should realise subconsciously he possibly has ripped a hundred tracks or whatever. music has to recycle over and over or it would result in such progression it would sound like a beeping, ticking, dog scratching , nasal plucking concoction…. hhmmm soulful.

  11. dkodak says:

i dont think you can subconsciously sample a big bit of dialogue though????

  12. monus says:

Can’t understand people’s ‘high horse’ attitude with this… someone used and entire recording without crediting it at all. You telling me you wouldn’t be pissed off about that?

Also, he was conveying a message that he’s obviously thought about and feels passionate about. Somebody else using this in a way that

    a) totally contradicts the message
    and
    b) is passed off as original work

is fucked up in my opinion and i can totally see why he’d be annoyed.

  13. dkodak says:

have you released many records pipecock, of so, has anybody ever sampled them?
also, has anybody ‘jacked’ any of your writing without crediting you?

  14. pipecock says:

why does it make a difference if it was my record that got sampled or not? its all about the rules of the game. and the rules are that there are no rules. when you put an acapella out it gets sampled, laid over other tracks, etc. that is the whole reason for it to exist. if you dont want that to happen, dont fucking put it out. its really that simple. its been this way since the dawn of dance music. there are acapellas that are more famous on the “stolen” version than on the original (the “jack’s house” on can u feel it and candi staton’s “you got the love” jump immediately to mind). whining about it is just obnoxious.

  15. dkodak says:

please at least answer the questions i asked.

  16. Can I say this as a complete outsider:

Had his tracks not been jacked and this article not been written, I never would have heard dj bone’s work. That’s the beauty of sampling you fucking cocksmiths! It doesn’t matter if a sample is credited or not; someone out there will eventually pick it out and spread the word if it takes a day or a decade. whether the sampler agrees or disagress with the original message is completely irrelevant; something inside of him is telling him to use that slice because somehow he knows it will reach people, move people, make them think, maybe even make them shuffle their feet. and god damn, if they do that, they just might feel compelled to find out where it came from so they can think or shuffle some more.

having said that and to end on a somewhat irrelevant note however, after listening to bone’s tracks, I think they’re shit. But it doesn’t fucking matter. He’s had 1 more myspace play and one more chance at finding listeners who can extract emotion from his work. Isn’t that what making music is fucking about?

Saturday in Chicago: The Soirée

This Saturday nite February 4th 2023 in Chicago is a very special event. Noleian Reusse and I have been friends for about 14 years now, and in that time we have DJed together and made music together on a number of occasions. Now we are throwing our first party together. I hollered at the homeboy…
