A “New” Mix: So Deep It Hurts

sdih

Someone was giving me shit in the comments section the other day about the fact that I haven’t put up a mix in a while. I looked to see how long it has been, and it was over a year and a half. Even worse was that it had actually been over TWO years since I did a mix just on ISM, as the three I dropped in ’08 were all guest mixes for other blogs and sites.

This made me decide to pull out a mix I did earlier this year for another project that has yet to get off the ground. The more I thought about it, the less sense this one made in the context of that project anyway. I did this one back in July with a bunch of joints that were new at that time, as well as a bunch of things I dug up in Detroit, Chicago, and Pittsburgh. This is another all electronic mix, probably the last in what I would loosely consider a trilogy starting with “412 Deep” and continuing with “Living and Dreaming”, and now finishing with “So Deep It Hurts”. After this, it will be back to more eclectic offerings from me!

Tracklist:

Burial + Four Tet “Moth” Index 12″
Moritz Von Oswald Trio “Pattern 3” Honest Jon’s LP
Lil Louis “New York” Diamond Records 12″
Solomun&Jackmate “Factory” phil-e 12″
UnCut “Kut Street (Instrumental House Mix)” Park-Wind 12″
Reggie Dokes “Chicago Pimp” Loft Supreme 12″
Tevo Howard “Without Me (Boogiedisco Mix)” Beautiful Granville 12″
Afro Celt Sound System “Release (Masters at Work Dub 2)” Real World 12″
$tinkworx “MKB” W.T. 12″
Pepe Bradock “Path of Most Resistance” Atavisme 12″
House of House “Rushing to Paradise (Walkin’ These Streets)” Whatever We Want 12″

Grab the mix here.

We’ve also got a bunch of good things coming up before the end of the year: new mixes from regular contributors Lerosa and Scott Ferguson, a guest mix from a deep techno label out of Chicago, our year end wrap-ups, and at least one interview but possibly more. There is a special Christmas present in discussion as well……

Nice mix… whose cat is that? Why is it on a leash?!

I am really regretting not picking up that Burial / Four Tet collabo. Hearing ‘Moth’ out fully in the mix is really nice and it blends perfectly into Pattern 3…btw very adventurous putting that in there! Hadn’t thought of Vertical Ascent having mix potential but it works well here.
Rest of the mix is ace as well. Thanks for posting!

thanks man. no idea whose cat that is, nor why it is on a leash. part of my picture choosing philosophy is to google image search the title of the post (or in this case the title of the mix) and use the oddest photo that comes up. this one came up!

as for the MVO3 record, i have played both Patterns 1 and 3 out in clubs! i think that shit is dancefloor music, at least if you play the deep shit. when i first heard the Burial/Four Tet tracks on sound sample, i said “i’ll order this if it falls into my lap, but i’m not gonna go out of my way to order it.” turns out i was getting some records from a local shop type thing and they had gotten one copy in, so i bought it! lucky me. the new Four Tet record is off the hook as well, i’ll be talking about it in the next new record thread i do next week….

  8. pipecock says:

i’m gonna bring more heat next year for sure! thanks!

Great mix, a lot of my favorites from 2009 are included on the mix. Thanks

  10. Tom says:

Really enjoying this and agree with Bernardo on that Four Tet/Burial into MVO3 transition. Works nicely.

Must have listened to that House of House track hundreds of times since it came out and it just never gets old.

Strangely one track that I loved when it came out, but lost its lustre very quickly for me is that Pepe Braddock track. I dunno why.

  11. pipecock says:

    thanks!

i think that the Pepe track is a little “over the top” for him, which makes it a bit less likely to stand up to repeat listenings. my solution for that was to not overplay it! i still like it, but i only pull it out occasionally. that keeps it fresh…

  12. Mr. Twon says:

    i still love it!

  13. deafnun says:

that pepe bradock track is freeking timeless and amazing… whoever said they werent feeling that one chek yaself

Saturday in Chicago: The Soirée

This Saturday nite February 4th 2023 in Chicago is a very special event. Noleian Reusse and I have been friends for about 14 years now, and in that time we have DJed together and made music together on a number of occasions. Now we are throwing our first party together. I hollered at the homeboy…
