If You Were Thinking About Coming to Pittsburgh…

I’d say Friday April 30 and Saturday May 1 would be the weekend to do it!

It’s of slightly more ISM related content (and it has a prettier poster to go at the top of this post!) so I’m first gonna talk about the excellent Rick Wade show which goes down Saturday May 1 at New Amsterdam in Lawrenceville. This is part of the monthly Love is Wet night at which I am a resident deejay along with Lauren G and Nikkels. We’re gonna be bringing in frequent guests (Sleazy McQueen was the guest back in February) that will most certainly be good for the ISM crowd in the region to check out. But right now, it’s all about the bad man himself, Rick Wade!

Rick was one of the big guns whose records I always checked when getting into this shit years ago. His productions are deeper than deep, and his deejay sets are not common in the US. We are very, very pleased to have him play the night. Sound is gonna be by the ridiculously ill Impact Audio guys, and the spot is a tiny chill spot that will be packed with cats primed to get down. We have pre-sale tickets available online here that will guarantee admission and save you a couple $$ off the door price. I highly recommend coming through early!

On Friday night April 30, my boy Matt McDermott and I are kicking off the first in what should be a monthly (or thereabouts!) all-night party called “Altered States” at this house called Helter Shelter which is also located in Lawrenceville, at the corner of 50th and Harrison streets. The sound for this night will also be provided by Impact Audio, guaranteeing that deep deep bass and clear highs that I simply refuse to do parties without! The idea for this one is to mix up rhythmic rock music, hiphop, dance, and anything else that we like that would make for a good party. To accomplish this, we have booked a nice lineup of diverse local artists as well as headliner Blondes from Brooklyn, who DEFINITELY should be on the radar of ISM readers.

They will be playing live relatively late, around 2am with my deejay set following them and taking it to the early morning. They don’t have any records out yet, but everything on their Myspace and on YouTube is excellent! I can’t wait to be able to get some of this shit on wax, like this cut “Spanish Fly”:

Also on the lineup is the excellent Buscrates, a Pittsburgh hip-hop producer whose music came out on my boy Andrew Burger’s Harmony Society label last year. Also also on the night are local band Tusk Lord, Expensive Shit which is a side project of Modey Lemon’s Paul Quattrone, TM Eye which is a side project of Modey Lemon rocker Phil Boyd along with my man Preslav from Machine Age studios, as well as legendary local deejay Ed Umm who will hopefully be pulling out some wild ass shit for this night! This will kick off at 10 and go till dawn! Some libations will be available early, but you can also BYOR (bring your own refreshments) to last you the night.

Honestly, I can’t remember being so excited for a whole weekend’s worth of music in the ‘Burgh in a long, long time! I know a couple cats already are planning on coming through for the weekend from Canada and Detroit, if you’re in the region it’s definitely worth it to come check it all out. If you’re gonna come through, add yourself to the Facebook events linked above and comment on them so we can see you!

wow Tom, the Blondes really are good. I usually am speculative about indie/Brooklyn bands moving into dance music but these guys are bringing it. And of course Rick Wade always brings that deepness to the floor. Should be a great weekend.

seriously, i don’t know about the Blondes background other than the fact that they went to Oberlin, so they may or may not have indie roots? but whatever, the shit they are doing is absolutely incredible and beautiful! too bad you’re so far away!

Nice lineup! I’d be there in a minute but I’ve really gotta focus on work before the long DEMF weekend. Any chance you’ll be recording your sets? Would be cool to share them here!
