Guest Mix: Chicago Skyway – In Context

Sean Hernandez, better known as Chicago Skyway, first appeared on everyone’s radar with last year’s “Bells” 12″ on Eargasmic. Since then, he has dropped EPs for M>O>S and Uzuri, and this past week has released his debut album “Wreckage” on Eargasmic (CD only right now, with vinyl coming up early in ’11!). There’s plenty of other stuff in the pipeline as well, including a track on an EP for Altered Moods (also featuring tracks by ISM favs Steven Tang and Specter in addition to label boss Malcolm Moore) and a remix for Windimoto.

Check out the video for “War” from the Wreckage album…

Moving on to this mix, a while back Sean and I were discussing the possibility of him doing a mix similar to the one Steven Tang did for us where he played all his own material. With so many new things out and a bunch in the pipeline, now seemed like a perfect time to do it! Chicago Skyway productions generally tend to rely heavily on the old Roland machines that everyone knows, but his skills are most evident in how he manages to coax so many different emotions and feelings from those machines. From jacking drums to beautiful melodies, with everything from aggressive acid and deep synth funk thrown in, this mix stays captivating. If you already know Sean’s released work, you will be happy to hear some new shit that isn’t out yet. If you’re unfamiliar with him, this is the perfect introduction! Much thanks to Sean for breaking us off with this excellent mix…

yo tmo what’s with the weird track numbering? it skips from 03 to 10.

anyway i am really feeling the cut at like 17 minutes in, is that “purgatory”?

  8. I’m losing it! I’m losing it and I love it!

  9. Chicago Skyway says:

Sorry bout that. That was my weird numbering. Not sure how that happened. LOL! It has nothing to do with track times at all.

That is “Purgatory” at 17 mins.

  12. Chicago Skyway and Steven Tang need to quit hanging out in freight elevators together taking promo pictures of each other.

  14. PR says:

Can I assume that is Sean’s remake of Frankie’s 909 track halfway through?
If so, which one is it in the tracklisting?

By Purgatory being on Eargasmic Digital does that mean it won’t be released on vinyl? Because that stood out for me and i’d buy a 12″. The LP’s on my imaginary wishlist for sure after hearing this mix.

  17. Chicago Skyway says:

Not sure if “Purgatory” will ever be released on vinyl.

    …but you nevah know! 😉
