Guest Mix: m50 – Area Megamix

As promised, our homeboy m50 broke us off with a special mix of all his own tunes and remixes! Producing under the alias Area, he has dropped EPs on Francois K’s Wave Music, Anton Zap’s Ethereal Sound, and more, as well as remixes for Mathematics, Echospace, and Matrix amongst many others. He has also recently founded his own vinyl label Kimochi (google this if you don’t know what it means NSFW), which I reviewed here. Check the release out and purchase direct from m50 here.

m50 is a dope deejay who is always pushing many different sounds. His first mix for ISM from 2.5 years ago (!!) covered various strains of Detroit and Chicago jams as well as tunes influenced by those fine cities. Though he hails from Chicago, he is now spending time across multiple continents, working on his craft and fine tuning his emotional electronic sounds that draw from techno, deep house, and ambient.

On this mix, he put together a collection of his own material, some out already, some unreleased, with original tunes as well as remixes he has done for other artists. My personal favorite tune by him is also in here, I’m waiting for that one to drop on wax! I think this mix is a really great way to get a feel for the work that he has been doing.

You can grab the mix here.

Unrelated to this post (cool mix though!), just wondering what you ISM folk thought about the recent dance issue of Wax Poetics??? Lots of shit in there about the history of techno/Ron Hardy/UR/Chicago House/disco etc. etc. On the techno front it covers a lot of the well documented shit like the influence of Mojo/Kraftwerk etc., but also has detail you typically don’t find in the typical run downs of the genre. Thought there must surely be some talking points in there for an ISM discussion????

I’ve read some of it, but not all yet. It’s good, as per usual, didn’t get a whole lot new out of the Detroit or UR chapters, but I really enjoyed the chapter on Bohannon for example. Need to rob it off my house mate again and give it a proper read!
