Gigs, Mixes

Pittsburgh is Definitely in the House

Nice things are definitely going down in Pittsburgh these days! The two gigs I posted about a few weeks back happened this weekend, and both were amazing! Rick Wade killed it at New Amsterdam, and the Altered States party rocked strong until 4:00am when the police came to shut things down in the middle of Blondes’ set. To be honest, we were REALLY way too loud and in the middle of a residential neighborhood, but their 25 minutes or so was pure magic with the soundsystem and party people all lining up for one of those perfect moments. Thankfully, the kind folks at Corner Cantina were nice enough to let Blondes play at sunset Saturday evening, which we got to enjoy while preparing for Rick Wade! If you look in the background of this pic behind the tree, you can see Blondes jamming it out on synths and drum machines. It was really another wonderful moment in a weekend full of them! Much thanks to everyone who played at the nights (you were all awesome!), everyone who came out (especially the Detroit and Hamilton crews!) to party, and of course my co-conspirators Matt McDermott and the Spoilers crew, Lauren and Quinn. We’ve got more big plans in the works!

To celebrate how much I am loving Pittsburgh right now, I have some treats lined up for you!

First up is my man Pete aka DJ Nice Rec with his Boogeyman mix. Pete is one of the hardest working men in the Pittsburgh underground; from his awesome deejay sets (one of which was the inspiration for the Altered States party!!) to his productions (some of which will be seeing wax this year, including some Love What You Feel action), you can hear the love he has for music in everything he does. This funk/boogie/disco mix has been in constant rotation in my ride since he hooked me up with a physical copy a couple weeks back. Now you can all enjoy it by downloading it here.

Next up is my man Curt Jackson. Curt is not technically a Pittsburgh resident any longer, having left for Atlanta a few years back, but Pittsburgh resides in his blood. His mix entitled Braddock Hustle (in tribute to the neighborhood he grew up in) runs through many styles of funky dance music, including a bunch of tracks that we used to bang out when we had a number of nights going on together back in 2005. This is that straight up Pittsburgh style shit right here, pure and unfiltered. If you were there, you know what I mean. If you weren’t, now you can find out! Download the mix here.

Last, but certainly not least, we have the recordings from the Rick Wade gig! It’s just two huge mp3s instead of being broken up into the individual sets, but that’s how my man gave it to me! The first part can be downloaded here, and it features Lauren G. up first, then my man Nikkels, followed by the first bit of my set (first track was Ibex’ “360” on Rush Hour). Part two can be downloaded here, and it has the last half of my set (ending with D. Wynn & The R-Tyme Production’s “Love In Music” on KMS) before Rick Wade steps in to bang it out!

I hope this isn’t too much music for all of you! 😉
